RACS’s core work is to advise and represent asylum seekers in their onshore applications for protection visas, and appeals to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. We advise and sometimes represent people who hold permanent protection visas with applications to bring their family members here.
Generally anyone can speak to us for telephone advice or drop in advice at our outreaches, but we apply our Casework Guidelines to any work beyond one-off advices. When we make these decisions, we take into account things like:
- The merits of the case;
- The capacity at RACS looking at our workload at the time;
- The extent to which the person can represent themselves or get help from another service; and
- Whether there’s a particular public interest in acting on the case and the particular circumstances of the case.
Unfortunately RACS does not have capacity to receive referrals from community or external organisations. We ask that anyone needing legal or migration help be referred to contact us directly through our telephone advice, or drop in for advice at one of our outreach drop in services.
